Ut Queant Laxis by Valentino Miserachs Grau

SSAA Choir, 6 pages

It is a hymn in honour of John the Baptist traditionally attributed to Paulus Diaconus. It is famous for its association with a Gregorian chant whose first six phrases each start on successive notes of the scale.

Ut queant laxis
resonare fibris,
Mira gestorum
famuli tuorum,
Solve polluti
labii reatum,
Sancte Iohannes.

In the Roman Rite this hymn is sung on June 24, the Feast of John the Baptist.

Translation:

So that these your servants can,

with all their voice,

to sing your wonderful feats,

clean the blemish of our spotted lips.

O Saint John!
