Joseph Vella
Joseph Vella does not follow trends; he creates them. Whether one sees him in his role as a composer, conductor, researcher, editor, university Professor – his name and reputation have become institutionalised in Malta and a by-word for musical excellence and organisational acumen. Equally versatile in what he does, Joseph Vella has established standards that would be a hard act to follow. A man of vision, with him at the helm success is a guarantee. He is generally regarded as Malta’s leading composer and, internationally, he is definitely, by far, the most widely-played contemporary Maltese composer. In the history of Maltese music, he is also the first and only symphonist.
Prestigious performances of his works have taken place all over the world. Joseph Vella’s long experience in the conducting field has seen him as guest conductor with many orchestras, to include, the Sofia Philharmonic, New York Prometheus Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta National do Porto, ‘Goffredo Petrassi’ Orchestra of Rome, ‘Gli Armonici’ of Palermo, Yamaha Foundation Symphony Orchestra of Japan, Upper Austria Youth Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia di Bologna, ‘I Musici’ of Rome, and many others. In this regard, over the years he has introduced to Malta such masterpieces as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Requiem, and large-scale works by Bruckner, Britten, Bernstein and Lloyd Webber. Joseph Vella’s name is also intrinsically connected with the highly-acclaimed opera productions at Teatru Astra, where he has conducted legendary singers in opera such as Aldo Protti, Nicola Rossi Lemeni, Adelaide Negri, Cecilia Gasdia, Ghena Dimitrova, Mark Rucker, Hao Jiang Tian, and Francesca Patané, apart from having launched to the world one of the best contemporary tenors on the lyric stage, namely, Joseph Calleja. In October 2012, he conducted Madama Butterfly with, arguably, one of the world’s best sopranos in the title role, Daniela Dessí, who sang alongside Fabio Armiliato as Pinkerton.
Joseph Vella has the distinctive honour of being appointed the first resident conductor of the National Orchestra of Malta, a post he occupied for the best part of the first two years of its existence. He has also made an international name for himself as a scholar, especially in the field of old Maltese music, which he has edited and performed in Germany, Italy, England, Portugal, Spain, Greece and Turkey. Notable examples are the concerts he conducted in New York (Alice Tully Hall – Lincoln Centre, UN Headquarters), London (St Martin-in-the-Fields) and Paris (Les Invalides), amongst others. Joseph Vella is Professor of Music at the University of Malta, composer-in-residence with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and director of the Malta Youth Orchestra.
